IGCSE COURSEWORK- Descriptive Writing

It’s an average summer morning. Birds are tweeting. Sky like blue waves are splashing. Children are playing. Shop stalls awaken. That includes me. I open my rose red colored stall.

The stall contains fresh fruits and veggies. From mouth drooling banana to sharon fruit and watermelon, To the everyday pure sweet British apples and potatoes. As soon as my sale sign is up, people from all ages come to see whats in store. From people the age of 10 to elderly couples. From 2 sales a minute to 6. As the sun progresses its trip across the sky, so do my sales. Families ahead in the distance are sun bathing in beautiful rainbow bikinis whilst i’m in my death defying heat attracting apron and jumper. Sweat pours down my palms and scalp through every sale. Small gusts form havoc to the dessert like sand. People complain about getting a foul fruit however no one knows the journey and effort it took for that one fruit to get to the counter on the stall. Looking into the distance you see stone houses with great history and delicacy made in the middle 1800’s yet people still complain about the resources and possessions they have. What is this society made up of? There are males and females from all different places around the world, like Caucasian, African american, Eastern Europeans, Asians but still do I only see the normal domestic travelers at my stall.

The day has progressed and it’s time to pack-up. The Sun is making it’s last appearance for this day. This day is the 18th of August 2011. This day will never awake again. As the seagulls make their last sight for today, so do my customers. The final sale is complete. Once I’ve packed and locked my stall, I head down the streets made out of cobble and begin walking through the dim yellow street lights. Every 2-3 steps a hear a howl from the left, a howl from the right and a howl from every direction. I guessed they were Owls. In the dark I see the cheese look alike moon giving out reflection of light from the sun hitting my surface giving me my own very shadow. The streets are pure silent with only the Owls to hear. It was a erie Town like no other. All I had was me, and my reflected shadow. This was an everyday thing. As I finally reach my white metallic Door step, I enter pulling the painted gold handle in order to do so. As the day drew into a close I knew I would have to get ready for the new journey made available for tomorrow. I slip into my Army camo pj’s and slip in to my King sized bed and pull the fluffy red blanket up to my chest. I take a deep breath and allow my body to sink into the white double lining duvet. I look up towards the Ice White Ceiling I let my eyes kick into rest enabling me to get ready for a new Day. The new day will be soon to come…

I like the idea you introduce of the journey of fruit, but it doesn’t go anywhere – you could develop this so much more.

You also present a contrast between your character’s uncomfortable warmth and sweat, but the setting you have provided us with seems almost too much if a contrast – how might you make this that little bit more believable?

Look at the ending of your second paragraph – this feels quite mechanical and forced. How might you work on a consistent vocabulary that would suit your speaker?

React!
