Is there still a need for public libraries?

Some people would say its part of their everyday lives and its really useful but with modern technology? do we really need them?

In my opinion I think libraries are “out of date” and have come to a point now where there really isn’t a need for them. People are now able to access books, internet, society and clubs over their devices from wherever, whenever.

Although libraries have been around for a long time and was a hit place for entertainment, it now isn’t. Society has the ability to access library features within a touch of a button without having to use the time to go to a library.

I think libraries can be replaced by more useful places for the public. I.e. Shelters, charity’s, fund raisers, grocery stores and etc. Lets use a shelter for the homeless as an example. Wouldn’t it be more useful to have a place for people in need to have a roof over their head and food on the table? Or just a room full of books that people don’t even need anymore?

Technology has come really far throughout the years and sooner or later we shouldn’t be surprised to see even more places not needed that use to be a use to the public. I also know why others might disagree with me for various small reasons such as it has been with us for centuries and has bought society together. This still doesn’t mean we need them. There is no need for libraries. We would be better off without them.

This isn’t about history, its about use. Libraries are still used as a place for family time and learning which we shouldn’t take for granted however that still can be used in an alternative. We could make community centres for people to come and relax with their friends and family and socialise. We’d be getting more of the public interested with new day to day activities and possibly help keep people healthy. I.e. Daily sport activities, life skills. This would give people more opportunity’s and open doors in life for people unlike a library does.

Libraries are useful for borrowing books for free however we don’t have the flexibility to take our time reading and enjoying the book because we have a due in date for the book. Whereas on any device you have all the time in the world to sit down and enjoy your book without having to worry you’ll have to be quick because its due back in a week or two. Its “your” copy. Your book. Its yours. This is another reason to why people have moved off libraries and on to modern technology. Its simply not needed anymore.

So that’s why I say we need to make better use of the land and building of a library and convert it into something more useful to the public. Why keep something we don’t need anymore? Lets be more useful. Lets help people. This is our chance to help the community and make something out of library’s.
